Personality Traits
Calm and controlled on the exterior, but inside Mai-Sal is a storm of complex thoughts and feelings held in check only by her acquired discipline and innate curiosity. "You can't know anything if you only listen to yourself," her master/mother always said. Words to live by. She does enjoy a good laugh though, and even with her self-control she does appear to have mood swings, though in truth these are often brought on at least partly by the weather.
Mannerisms and Appearance
Exotic is overused for genasi, but certainly it applies to Mai-Sal, a Stormsoul who positively radiates the unbridled potential of the Elemental Chaos--and yet, she wears an expression of serenity on her chiseled amethyst face. Her leylines (which she has no problem showing off) shine a cold white light matched in intensity by her eyes and by the crystalline formation atop her head, a sculpted image of thick flowing locks of hair.

Background & Other Notes
As a foundling left at the front steps of a wizard's tower belonging to Adrastea Sunstar, a Calishite enchantress and retired spymaster for the Black Hand (not to be confused with the god, Bane), Mai-Sal never knew her birth parents. Any attempts to discover the baby's parents were fruitless and it was assumed they had fallen victim to the city's intrigues, so the enchantress decided to raise the Genasi child as her own. It proved to be her greatest challenge, since the girl was supernaturally strong--and strongly emotional, and Adrastea had no children of her own so she didn't have experience to rely on. So, even though she'd intended to do it anyway, Adrastea had to teach the girl to be a mage for it was the only way she could learn to control herself and the elemental forces that raged within her. It worked. Mai-Sal was gifted, and once she learned how to listen and how to learn she became a great student and, eventually, a great mage. Evocations and elemental magic came to her naturally, she barely needed to study to understand them and found she could channel her own elemental strength into them. Adrastea's chosen fields, enchantments and illusions, were a bit more of a challenge though she eventually learned the basics and moved up from there. Living in a den of thieves like Calimport, she soon learned such skills were necessary for survival. Years passed and Mai-Sal instictively yearned to travel, to follow the breeze wherever it led--hence her chosen surname, Stormchaser--so she and Adrastea journeyed for a time with some of her master/mother's old acquaintances in the Black Hand, and she learned quite a lot more about the rest of Faerun, about the Spellplague, about her profession and about herself. She also learned about the five great wyrms who've come to rule much of the continent, especially about Tortia, the capricious copper dragon ruler of Calimshan who's said to go about Calimport in disguise, secretly stirring up jealousies and intrigues to undermine her underlings' burgeoning power structures and keep the city in a state of general disorder. Finally, she learned that after many years in the shadows, the Black Hand's leadership was planning to take the organization out of the darkness and into the light to lead a rebellion against Tortia--or at least, against her closest mortal sycophants in the Pasha's Palace and their allies. Instinctively Mai-Sal, an innate believer in personal freedom, agreed with their motives and joined the Black Hand as their main researcher and eventually as a magical assassin, always seeking the best, most efficient ways to dispatch the myriad threats they often faced. Everything came to a head when the newly public Black Hand led a coup against the palace--they didn't realistically expect to dethrone Tortia, but they did believe if they could make a strong enough show of massed force against her corrupt ministry, she just might change the way things are done. Mai-Sal and her compatriots succeeded at slaying the ministry and their guards, but all were amazed to find the great dragon absent from her palatial treasury. All save one: Adrastea, their leader, Mai-Sal's master/mother, whose high-pitched laughter rang out from all around them. "Congratulations! Now govern," she laughed mockingly, and the copper-red haired enchantress changed and grew to enormous size, showing herself to be none other than Tortia in one of her many guises. It soon became clear that Tortia, for reasons of her own (very likely to stave off the boredom of immortality), creates and maintains many disguises for years at a time to better cultivate not only intrigues and jealousies throughout Calimshan to keep the city in chaos, but also rebellions and revolutionaries to rise up against the tide of corruption--only to become poisoned and consumed by corruption themselves. The challenge she laid at their feet was the same as the last generation of rebels and the ones before--to actually follow through on their promises to the masses gathered at the door, and clean up this town. Whether they actually succeed or not is irrelevant to her, she'd be entertained either way; all that matters is they accept--and refusal meant death. Mai-Sal of course accepted, and today she is continuing her research work and her apprenticeship under "Adrastea", who taught her pupil how to unleash the elemental forces sleeping within her to their fullest extent. She also continues to travel, picking up whatever information of the other realms that she can and bringing them back for the Black Hand's (or rather her master's) use.
