Personality Traits
Valen is sharp, witty and knows how to get what he wants out of people, whether it be through courtesy, threats or bald-faced lying, but he's emotionally distant and prone to bouts of melancholia.
Mannerisms and Appearance
Valen is a rather ordinary, if handsome, looking man, thin but surprisingly hardy. His dark gray cloak and boots, and even darker leather armor, attest to one who prefers to go about unnoticed. The exception, of course, is when he calls forth his dual blades of solid light and shadow. Apart from his emotional issues and secretiveness, Valen generally behaves normally--except when the stars are out, when he routinely gazes skyward as if looking for signs of things to come. If pressed, and if dealing with someone who's been particularly honorable toward him (knowing the strangeness of his ideas to "normal" people), Valen will speak of certain stars as though they were actual beings and not simply points of light.

Background & Other Notes
Valen grew up on the outskirts of Frivale, but his childhood ended early as his parents were killed in a raid by elves of the Endless Forest – he and his younger brother and sister survived but his older brother was killed – leaving them orphans with no family other than an uncle off on a ship somewhere who they’d only ever seen once. As the oldest, he took on the responsibility to keep the three of them fed, clothed, sheltered and safe, so it wasn’t long until he took to the life of crime. Petty stuff at first, but he proved to be quite good at it, good enough to get noticed by an Emerald Eye operative in town who offered his siblings “a home with a good family with kids” if he would join their guild. Not really knowing what else to do, he accepted and was sent off to Petor for training. It never arrived. Again, the war with the elves took Valen’s future from him, as the caravan he was sent with was sacked on the road south; he managed to escape, but in the darkness he left the road and entered a part of the forest that even the elves fear to tread. He ended up taking shelter in a grotto that happened to “belong” to an unseelie fey named Leanan, a beautiful but cruel and fickle spirit who, taking a liking to him, beguiled him and brought him into the Feywild as a pet. She got that and more. Valen, forgetting all his cares and troubles as soon as she ensnared him, proved to be a willing and surprisingly able participant in all her devious activities at the Winter Court, so much so that she granted him a portion of her power and began instructing him in the dark arts and fey swordsmanship, molding and shaping him into a bodyguard for her. Despite engaging in ever more depraved acts with his patron, Valen somehow managed to keep his soul – his enthusiasm had faded, but in the recesses of his mind he knew what would happen to him if he didn’t continue to please Leanan, so he kept his part of the bargain until such time as he could betray her and escape. That he finally did, setting it up so that he would be away when one of her rivals at Court attacked. Knowing that his convenient absence wouldn’t prevent him from facing the same fate or worse – he was, after all, just as guilty as she – Valen fled as far as he could, eventually ending up in the Gloaming Court of the Eladrin. This is where he would meet his next master. Wandering free but now alone and despondent, Valen felt he would surely give in to self-destruction; indeed he may well have ended it all, but for a chance encounter, happening upon a battle between fomorians and a band of eladrin who called this starlit land home. Knowing the giants’ wickedness all too well and wanting to redeem himself, Valen threw himself into the fray, intending to die heroically allowing the eladrin to escape. Instead they fought even harder, and in the end most were spared though Valen himself was near death. The eladrin brought him before their mad but well-meaning tulani lord, Llewellyn, who was amazed at the story of a human who fought like an unseelie fey. After he was nursed back to health, Valen, in awe of the celestial being, poured out his story, who agreed he had much to atone for, but that he should do it where he belongs – at home in Vidalis. Llewellyn revealed to Valen a prophesy of great evils awakening in his world that only the Stars Above could answer. It was here that Llewellyn introduced him to the practice of stargazing, and to the pact to the Guide Star at the heart of it, as well as his taking the name Darkstar – for only the stars would illuminate his darkness. After much training and retraining, studies and stargazing, Valen was deemed ready to return to the world, and not a moment too soon: he emerged from a planar portal in the year 201 CS, some 50 years after leaving – time flows differently in the Feywild, and he was kept young by his mistress, such that he only aged one year for every five he was away. Valen didn’t have time to be amazed at all the changes that had taken place, especially elves and humans fighting side-by-side, as he soon learned of the Demon’s siege of Frivale, his old hometown. Traveling up from the south, he arrived within sight of the wrecked city just as King Garreth’s forces swept down out of the northeast. It was a bloody day, but again he survived. In the months since his return, Valen tried piecing together anything he could about his family and assisting where he could with rebuilding Frivale, but his concern was ever for the future that he glimpsed in the stars. As such he has joined the Guild of Mages, hoping to find the answers he seeks.
